The great Bascinet from the Doges Palace Venice, most likely french 1380-90
The upper section of the skull and visor are in 2mm spring steel the lower section of the skull is in 1.6. The whole is raised from a fabricated cone and hardened and tempered. The engraved brass borders are all forged single pieces as suggested by the placement of the holes in the original. The pattern on the brass border is taken from the small piece that remains on the visor mount on the right side of the helmet. Unlike a traditional bascinet all of the weight and any impact is transferred to the torso rather than the head and neck.
